Sixteen

I'm sixteen

and I'm a socialist

I live in a cultural bunker

and a political disconnect

from the world

which I inhabit

I go to socialist summer camp

where I'm kidnapped

and driven out of town

and tossed from a moving car

into a field

with few clothes and no money

I must be trained

I must prove my worth

to live without

the bourgeois trappings

of our modern world

our modern world

I must be good

I must show my strength

to live without

the bourgeois notions

of our American life

our American life

Money is the root of all evil

money is the root of all

Religion is the opiate of the masses

but God has made me this way.

To be sixteen

and a socialist

I live in a cultural bunker

and a political disconnect

from the world which I inhabit
